Help get the word out to Combat-Injured Vets
Hopefully, combat-injured vets are hearing about this but please help me get the word out. Vets that moved and didn't tell DoD their new address might not get the information.
Many service-ending combat-injured vets were incorrectly taxed on their severance pay due to issues with the DoD's payment system. Congress passed a law allowing the IRS to accept amended tax returns back to 1991, instead of the standard 3 years. The DoD will be sending letters with the information. That letter is required for filing the amended return.
The letter will be going to the address recorded in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS). If vets need to check (or update) their addresses, they can access the information at https://www.dmdc.osd.mil/identitymanagement/, the U.S. Government Information Service designed for beneficiary self-service-authorized use. They can logon to the site using the Department of Defense Self-Service Logon (DS LOGON), a Common Access Card (CAC), or a DFAS myPay Password. if a veteran needs to be added to DEERS. Call 1.800.827.1000 and say ‘ebenefits’ when prompted for the reason for the call.
And, of course, if they need someone to amend the return for them, I'm available. Since many of the tax returns will need to be manually done (there may be no access to software), I suspect that many will need assistance. I have experience with amending beyond 3 years -- I actually handled similar cases last year when Congress fixed the rules for exonerees.
Thanks in advance for sharing this as appropriately,
